Box Culvert Bridge Joint Protection in Virginia
VDOT Uses Fortress Kevlar® to Waterproof and Extend Bridge Life
The Challenge
An aging bridge in Virginia had deteriorated beyond repair and needed a full replacement. A new precast box culvert bridge was set in place as part of the rebuild. As with all bridge infrastructure, long-term durability and protection against water and salt intrusion—especially at the joints—were critical to ensuring a lasting investment.
The Solution
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), a longtime user of Fortress products, once again turned to Fortress Kevlar® reinforcement to provide a durable waterproofing solution. Their approach included:
-
Kevlar® Waterproofing Membrane:
Fortress Kevlar® material was saturated with a two-lift epoxy system and combined with #9 Basalt aggregate at every joint of the box culvert sections. This treatment bonded to the surface and created a tough, flexible barrier at each seam. -
Joint Sealing and Corrosion Protection:
This waterproofing process prevents water and deicing salts from penetrating into the concrete joints—protecting the steel reinforcement cabling from corrosion, one of the leading causes of bridge degradation.
The Outcome
With Fortress Kevlar® in place, the new bridge structure is equipped for long-term durability and corrosion resistance, significantly extending the service life of the culvert. VDOT’s continued use of Fortress technology reflects their confidence in reliable, field-proven solutions that meet demanding transportation standards.
Why It Matters
Bridges and culverts face constant exposure to the elements—especially salt and moisture that accelerate structural decay. The use of Kevlar®-reinforced epoxy barriers at concrete joints delivers a high-performance defense against these forces, reducing long-term maintenance costs and improving public safety.
